I’ve been studying Revelation for a few months. Our Adult Men’s SS Class will formally start our study of the book in 2 weeks. Our youth have been studying it for a little while now. They’ve made it through 9 chapters, starting 10th next week.
Since we are beginning the study fresh, I am looking forward to this study! And with this excitement I present this nugget I’ve been meditating on for years. Because I will not be able to speak all this during the short time we are together.
Exodus 21:1-6 (ESV) 1 “Now these are the rules that you shall set before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, for nothing. 3 If he comes in single, he shall go out single; if he comes in married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out alone. 5 But if the slave plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and he shall bring him to the door or the doorpost. And his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.
That’s the text I will be looking at. But, the study is Revelation, so the reference in Revelation is verse 1.
Revelation 1:1 (ESV) The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show to his servants the things that must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
The word I’m looking at is servants. In Greek, δοῦλος. doulos, a slave. The reason i’m looking at servants here is because of the flow of the sentence.
the unveiling, removing of the veil, revealing
Jesus the Anointed One, the Messiah, The Christ
which God, the Father, The Creator of the Universe
gave him, Jesus, to show his servants, δοῦλος, slaves.
So, back to Exodus now, reason…it’s the law. The tutor.
when you buy a Hebrew, a kinsman, brother…Slave (δοῦλος)
he shall serve six years, which is the equivalent to God’s creation work, 6 Days.
he shall go out free in the 7th, pointing to the Sabbath, from God’s rest from his work at the time of creation. (A Pattern continued throughout scripture)
if he comes in single, he goes out single
if he comes in with a wife, he goes out with his wife
if he comes in single and is given a wife, even if she has children, he goes out single
but if he plainly says, I love my master! (similar to Greek, ἀγάπη, agape) [I need to learn Hebrew meaning.]
this love is reciprocated with rich spiritual meaning. The Master loves him so, He will adopt him, the Hebrew Brother, into His Household, by redemption by meeting him at the entrance of His House, meeting Him in the air, the exit of Eden, the place where Heaven and Earth Meet, the entrance to the tabernacle and the temple the entrance to where God will dwell with man, a Holy place.
and He will take an awl and pierce it through his ear, opening his servant’s ear to hear Him and by Hearing, Obedience is the Fruit, fastening him to His House. A living stone, made by God and not a brick, made by a rebellious, confused man. The slave, becomes son, one with the Father and one with the Son, in unity, Communion, one flesh, with the Master. Joined, Married by Covenant, making the son a pillar in the Father’s Temple.
And when you’re joined with the Father, Nothing Can Separate you from the Love of God.
So, Reflecting on why I wanted to look at the word, δοῦλος, because this is rich pay-dirt.
This book is written to the:
the slaves that are already sons,
who may partake and enjoy all of what the master has,
much like the eldest brother of the prodigal son, who chose not to partake
because of lack of knowledge and rebellion.
but as a Son, like Mephibosheth, a cripple at the actual table of God.
no longer having to work, but resting in the Work of my King.
eating from the Tree of Life.
I am enjoying my study and meditation on the book of Revelation. I will have to post more of my studies later.
